Stop Dumping Books in Bins – Defend Intellectual Freedom in Ireland

To everyone who believes in the value of a book:

We, the undersigned, affirm that the greatness of any society is measured by its respect for the written word. Ideas should be debated, not buried. Destroying a book is silencing a voice. Civilization begins where the dumping of books ends.

This is not only a moral principle — it is a constitutional one.
Article 40.6.1 of the Constitution of Ireland protects the right of every citizen to express and communicate their convictions and opinions. This protection extends to printed materials, academic texts, and cultural heritage. The arbitrary disposal of books in waste bins contradicts this constitutional spirit and undermines Ireland’s commitment to intellectual freedom.

On 15 February 2026, hundreds of books — including classical works of jurisprudence, history, and Quranic exegesis — were discarded in waste bins at the Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland. This act was justified by labelling these texts as “extremist,” a claim that has been publicly refuted by scholars, librarians, and community members who recovered these valuable academic works.
Such labelling without due process constitutes a form of intellectual censorship that has no place in a democratic society.

The ICCI Library: A Cultural and Academic Asset
According to publicly available information, the ICCI library historically contained:

For decades, it served as a multilingual research space and a quiet environment for learning. The destruction or disposal of such a collection represents a loss of shared intellectual heritage.

We, therefore, call for the following:

1. Immediate Protection of the Remaining Library
The management of the Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland must safeguard all remaining books and prevent further disposal.
2. Preservation Through Transfer, Not Destruction
If the Centre no longer wishes to maintain the library, the books must be transferred to:

3. Commitment to Intellectual Freedom
Ireland must remain a country where knowledge is preserved, not discarded; where ideas are examined, not erased; and where cultural heritage is treated with dignity.

نحن، الموقّعين أدناه، نؤمن بأن عظمة أي مجتمع تُقاس بمدى احترامه للكلمة المكتوبة. فالأفكار تُناقش ولا تُدفن، وإتلاف الكتاب هو إسكاتٌ لصوت. إن الحضارة تبدأ حيث يتوقف رمي الكتب في النفايات.
هذا المبدأ ليس مجرد موقف أخلاقي، بل هو حق دستوري. فالمادة 40.6.1 من الدستور الأيرلندي تكفل لكل مواطن الحق في التعبير عن قناعاته وآرائه، وتشمل هذه الحماية بوضوح المواد المطبوعة والتراث الفكري. إن التخلص العشوائي من الكتب في حاويات القمامة يتعارض مع روح هذا النص الدستوري، ويقوّض التزام أيرلندا التاريخي بحماية الحرية الفكرية.

مكتبة المركز: تراث معرفي لا يجوز التفريط فيه
تشير المعلومات المتاحة إلى أن مكتبة المركز الثقافي الإسلامي كانت تضم:

لقد كانت المكتبة لعقود بيئة تعليمية هادئة وموردًا بحثيًا متعدد اللغات. إن إتلاف أو رمي هذا التراث ليس شأنًا محليًا فحسب، بل خسارة للمعرفة الإنسانية المشتركة.

وعليه، نطالب بما يلي:
1. حماية فورية لما تبقى من المكتبة
نطالب إدارة المركز بوقف أي عمليات تخلص من الكتب، وضمان حماية ما تبقى منها.
2. النقل بدل الإتلاف
في حال عدم رغبة المركز في الاحتفاظ بالمكتبة، يجب نقل الكتب إلى:

ونرفض رفضًا قاطعًا إتلافها أو إرسالها لشركات التدوير.
3. احترام الحرية الفكرية
يجب أن تبقى أيرلندا بلدًا تُصان فيه المعرفة ولا تُهان، وتُناقش فيه الأفكار ولا تُمحى، ويُحترم فيه التراث الثقافي بكل أشكاله.
