  • Petition for Increased Safety Measures and Speed Limit Enforcement near Schools
We, the undersigned, are writing to express our deep concern regarding pedestrian and traffic safety on the roads approaching schools in Spiddal on route R336. Despite our proactive efforts, including engaging with local representatives and Galway County Council (GCC), we have yet to see sufficient action taken to ensure the safety of students and the local community. Recent incidents have highlighted the urgent need for enhanced safety measures in this area, and we are seeking your support in addressing these issues. This summer alone, there have been four traffic incidents within Spiddal village, the most recent occurred during school drop-off. GCC has recently published the Draft Road Traffic (Special Speed Limits) County Galway, which includes proposals for special speed limits outside schools on regional roads in other parts of the county. We believe that Scoil Éinne also warrants a special speed limit designation. Although GCC has repaired flashing amber advance warning signs, they are largely ineffective due to their placement outside drivers’ direct line of sight. As a result, we are requesting the following immediate measures: • Strict enforcement of speed limits. • Installation of additional advance warning signage and village gateway signs. • Introduction of a north-south raised pedestrian crossing on the R336, supported by appropriately sized footways leading to the crossing. • In line with the Department of Transport’s September 2023 Speed Limit Review (section 5.2), we believe that Scoil Éinne qualifies as a School Speed Zone and should benefit from appropriate speed limits and treatments designed to manage traffic speeds.

  • Stop large corporations harvesting huge forests of seaweed from the west coast
These application have been submitted to your department, you have the power to stop this. Acadian Seaplants, a massive Canadian corporation and owner of Arramara Teoranta, and Bioatlantis Ltd have put in applications to harvest huge amounts of wrack from swathes of the west coast. Maps are available here. Handing over seaweed rights to large corporations would leave communities with no input into how their land and environment was being treated. Seaweed forests are crucial for protecting communities and homes against coastal erosion, providing the bedrock of the food chains, being a nursery for fish populations, while also being a rich part of the heritage and folklore along the west coast. We don't want our coastlines to be scraped clean of seaweed just so massive corporations can make profits. **Update 12-02-26** There are still applications in to harvest seaweed from the coasts of Mayo, Galway and Kerry. One large application has been withdrawn; this is a great first step but we want no corporations being granted the rights to harvest seaweed along our coast. That means that we need to continue to sign and share the petition and make sure the minister knows that the west is against corporate takeover of seaweed harvesting rights. **Update 11-02-26** The information available on gov.ie is apparently inaccurate. According to the department where this application is lodged (and still live) and they are saying that they don't deal with any applications. That they are dealt with by MARA. This is unacceptable as people up and down the West coast are taking the departments publications in good faith and are finding it impossible to get clear, easily accessible information. Questions still remain as to the scale of the harvesting and the underlying issue that our precious resource is under threat from being harvested by a large corporation. The fact of the matter remains the same: we don't want the coastline stripped of seaweed and we don't want a corporate takeover of seaweed harvesting rights. The Fight Continues!

  • Abolish Good Character references in rape trials
Allowing Good Character references during Rape trials is re-traumatising & unnecessary. Good character tells us nothing about whether someone had consent, or had reasonable belief they had consent. Sexual assault, is when a sexual act takes place in the absence of CONSENT. Not the absence of good character. The continuation of this evidence perpetuates the harmful & dangerous rape myth that if someone has a 'good character' this may be considered as evidence to give them a more lenient sentence. We feel this is a huge omission of the key recommendations from the Gillen Review 2019. One of the key recommendations at point 4 within the Gillen Review, stresses the need for measures to be introduced at the outset of the trial to combat rape myths. We feel by continuing to allow such evidence, does the exact opposite. We call for immediate action from the Assembly to ensure Victims and survivors of sexual trauma are protected during the Court process. But also to dispel harmful rape myths throughout our society that good character means someone isn't capable of abuse.- THIS IS NOT TRUE!! We welcome any guidance & training the Judiciary is set to have, although it is not enough. We call for the immediate end of "Good Character" references during sexual assault trials- which will contribute to a shift in misconceptions & myths around sexual violence that are prevalent throughout NI. The last thing a survivor needs to hear after sitting through the trial process, is the 'good character' of their perpetrator paraded in court. We call this process out & state it should not be considered when deciding the sentence a perpetrator should get. This undermines the conviction itself & more importantly diminishes & invalidates the survivors trauma.

  • Declare Housing Emergency in Galway
We the undersigned acknowledge the Council’s inability to deal with the housing and homelessness crisis in our city. We petition the Council to inform Government that this is the case, and to state that the Government must now declare a national housing emergency. Such a declaration will enable the Government to access special European Union funding to invest in housing, and also allow the Government advance emergency measures through legislation to tackle this national calamity.

  • Open Letter to Joe Biden: Ceasefire in Gaza Now!
Across the island of Ireland, thousands of families live with the unending grief of having lost loved ones to conflict borne of oppression and systemic injustice. We cannot stand by and watch as thousands of Palestinians are slaughtered in response to the atrocity committed by Hamas on the 7th October. We stand in grief with all who have lost and suffered. Yet, our history means we know that more conflict is not the answer.
