Reform the Arterial Drainage Act

Stop the Office of Public Works programme of river destruction and bring flood protection into the 21st Century by reforming the Arterial Drainage Act from 1945

Why is this important?

The Office of Public Works (OPW) is mandated under the Arterial Drainage Act 1945 to 'maintain' over 11,000km of river channel in Ireland - something that has resulted in the destruction of whole river systems. We need a new law that is fit to address the biodiversity and climate crisis and that works with - and for - people and nature.

We will now deliver these to Minister Patrick O'Donovan as well as other parliamentarians so that we can get this issue on the political agenda. Thanks again! Pádraic

Thank you for your support - the IWT and other environmental groups met with Minister O'Donovan yesterday and raised this issue with him. He promised us a formal response. You can also read some background to the Arterial Drainage Act here https://iwt.ie/the-war-on-rivers/
