Justice for Victims of Illegal Adoption

Carry out a full investigation into the extent of the illegal adoption scandal - we need openness and transparency. Victims and survivors need to provided with supports as they are given life-altering news on who they are and what was done to them. Access to healthcare including counselling services is required. The state and society must take accountability and responsibility for what was done.

Why is this important?

The illegal adoption scandal impacts on thousands of people in Ireland. The scale of what has happened has yet to be uncovered. It throws yet another spotlight on the cruelty inflicted on pregnant women and babies born out of crisis pregnancies.
People have a right to know their true identities and the Irish state needs to make every possible option available to people seeking information, including DNA testing. People affected by this scandal need health and psychological care as a matter of urgency - imagine finding out over a phone call or a letter that you are not who you thought you were all your life. The longer term health implications are also very serious.

Thanks to everyone for the ongoing support. We need to keep this up so please continue to share and highlight. The State will continue to suppress this issue otherwise.

I ask for your support with all the humility I can muster. I do not believe we should ask for much more than this but I also believe we cannot accept anything less than this.

2018-06-12 21:45:35 +0100

The ask is likely to comprise three key demands which are respectful, compassionate and proportionate:
a) That we remove the unnecessary barriers in place that stop people that want to meet each other from meeting each other within days and weeks rather than years and decades;
b) That all adoptees are offered the opportunity to get their DNA profile provided to them. No adoptee should be denied the right to prevent harm from genetics being passed through to their children without knowing otherwise. There is particular exposure to the paternal line but also on the maternal line where no match can be made, is desired or is possible.
c) Allow for DNA opt-in system that allows families that are open to finding matches to submit DNA for matching purposes to a national database.

None of the above infringe anyone's right to privacy (adoptees or birth parents) are reasonable, de minimis positions to take.

Thanks to everyone for the support to date. This campaign is going to be a long haul. Adoption has never been a topic that grabs the public for long. There is something about Adoption that makes people that aren't adopted, who determine whether we can have at least some of our rights vindicated, nervous and unlikely to take action. I am patient and from the contact, I have received, I am absolutely determined to see this through this time. Too many adoptees have asked me to persevere and I feel an obligation to keep this up. Please continue to spread the message. Our inconvenient truth will be acknowledged.

More on these issues (much more) is available here. Theresa who runs the adopted illegally website has been in touch and supports us. I hope you will support her campaign in turn. If we work together, all interested parties, we can keep this story in the news and the pressure up on the government in relation this.

The paper is willing to accept letters up to 150 words, ideally in response to their coverage from anybody interested in this so please be active. As a newspaper, they strongly campaigned and covered the pro-repeal side of the 8th and seem committed to campaigning on this also.

Eamon Delaney also covered this in a column in the same paper.

I'd like to thank everyone for helping this campaign move forward. The column I was asked to contribute to the Times Ireland edition was as follows:

My name is Ross McCarthy. I am adopted. I’m asking people to support this campaign. There is so much more to come on this. The scandal that emerged this week is the tip of the iceberg. I laid out in detail my take as an adopted person on this scandal here. https://twitter.com/rosspmccarthy/status/1001787540595191808

Please promote this campaign via your social media channels. I have been tremendously encouraged by the response to my posts. Not least from UpLift.

Change is possible if we become the change we seek.
