Give Identity Rights to Adoptees in Ireland

Currently there is no legislation allowing adoptees automatic access to their own files. Automatic access to adoption files needs to be legislated for, so that the equality and identity rights given to other citizens are afforded to adoptees.

Why is this important?

Irish adoptees have no automatic right to access our adoption files, birth certificate, health, heritage or history information. A right to identity is a recognised human right and adoptees are denied this right. This affects Irish Adoptees from historic, domestic adoption, along with their children and extended families.

Reasons for signing

  • Husband is one of the "illegally" adopted. Never adopted, has a false/illegal birth cert instead. His name is not legal, how can I or our Son have his name? Been told our marriage may not be legal - used his false birth cert to obtain that marriage in the UK. Been told his false birth cert could be challenged. State & Church allowed & encouraged this. You are making people ill with worry, the whole family need a LEGAL identity.
  • The Right to Identity is inalienable.
  • I signed as I would like to know for my health . I have felt frowned upon when asked about my health. Plus trying to find my birth very for my marriage was like looking for a needle in a haystack.
