Stop the Expansion of the Data Centre in Little Island
Halt the expansion of the Data Centre in Little Island and implement a moratorium on the building of any further Data Centres in the county.
Why is this important?
In May, the ESB announced that would be raising electricity prices by 8%, which amounts to about €138 extra a year. Data Centres, which consume 22% of the national electric output, drive up electricity prices as they put strain on already over-taxed infrastructure.
They also contribute to the worsening climate crisis as they incentivise the production of ever-increasing amounts of electricity, which requires the burning of more and more fossil fuels. All the while, they guzzle thousands of gallons of clean water daily, just to keep their servers cool.
The intended Data Centre expansion in Little Island is a net negative for the local area. It would provide next to no employment, while contributing to the rising utility prices and threatening the enviroment, particulalrly the local bat and badger populations.
It needs to be stopped.
