Reduce Fuel Taxation
Please lower the taxation placed on fuel in Ireland, we are currently paying more on tax than we are on the actual fuel in this country and it needs to change.
Why is this important?
As of February 2022, the Irish Government applies a tax rate of 55.23% on petrol and 50.86% on diesel. With the cost of living on the way up and fuel prices estimated to break the €2 mark in coming weeks, as of today, March 1st 2022, I put forth that the Irish Government should apply a reduction in the amount of tax they apply to fuel in this already overpriced country.
To break down the charges, as shown on the AA website, fuel, as of February 2022, is being bought at 79.375c for petrol and 82.358c for diesel, the excise duty on this, including carbon tax, is 62.771c for petrol and 51.902c for diesel. The National Oil Reserves Agency (NORA) is taxed at 2c for both.
Then on top of that we have VAT of 33.15c for petrol and and 31.34c for diesel.
This means, we the everyday drivers, are paying 97.925c a litre for petrol and 85.242c for a litre for diesel everytime we go to the forecourt.
We call on the Irish government to apply a temporary change in rates in excise (or better yet, permanent,) to help alleviate the ever increasing of living in our country. People all over are feeling the pinch when it comes to fueling their vehicles and heating their homes. The Irish government needs to acknowledge that the current setup is not feasible for the majority of the population.
Please act soon,
The Irish Nation
