Extend Maternity Leave to 12 Months

Review the current maternity leave policy.
Increase Maternity Leave to a minimum of 12 months
Extend paid Maternity Leave to 10 months
Offer a shared Maternity Leave allocation between both parents.

Why is this important?

Insufficient Childcare in Ireland for babies under 1 year

Some mums have to switch to formula feeding after breastfeeding for 6 months as they go back to work

Ireland is one of the worst countries in the EU for Maternity Leave entitlements.

How it will be delivered

We are first working to gain signatures and we will then deliver the petition to Roderic O'Gorman's office personally.
We really need 20% of birthing mothers to sign this to gain any momentum which is 10,000 signatures.

I have received recent feedback from Roderic O'Gorman's office that they have no plans in the future to extend maternity leave as the following was introduced recently;

On 21 April the Government gave its approval for the drafting of a Work Life Balance and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill. The Bill was approved on 20 September 2022 and is now before the Houses of the Oireachtas for consideration. The main purpose of the proposed legislation is to transpose elements of the EU Work Life Balance Directive and provide new rights to parents and carers in order to support a better work life balance.
