🚸 Zebra Crossing Removed – Safety Compromised 🚸 Kilcoole

A vital zebra crossing in our village—used daily by school children and pedestrians—has been removed at the entrance to the car park behind Centra.

In a small but growing village, we should be promoting road safety, not removing it.

Why is this important?

There was a pedestrian crossing for years beside a busy bus stop, right at the door of Centra and it was an extremely helpful safety feature. It’s been replaced with just a painted stop line—no signage, and no proper protection for pedestrians and no warning for drivers. The Council don’t have any plans to add  signage either.

Despite concerns already raised, Wicklow County Council has confirmed it will not be reinstated, advising instead that the public simple needs to “be alert” when crossing. This is not good enough. We need safe infrastructure, not vague advice. Local TD Jennifer Whitmore has supported contact with the Council, but they need to hear from more of us.

Cars, vans, and delivery trucks drive straight over the line without stopping until they reach the main road. This is a serious risk to public safety.

I am following up about the removal of zebra crossing markings at the entrance to central Kilcoole. This continues to be a busy junction with no safety for pedestrians.
In addition to this I am increasingly concerned about the condition of the main road through Kilcoole, in particular due to the building works at Kilcoole primary school. There is a growing number of potholes of increasing size. This is dangerous for cars and if left unfixed, will result in more potholes along the road. Finally the faint road markings on the main road, particularly from above the school, at the speed ramp at the school when the road curves at the petrol station, past the Tesco entrance, and further on down. Regularly cars cross lanes without realising. Please raise these concerns and ask for resolution asap to increase safety for all in Kilcoole.
