We petition you to demand an extension of the sanctions currently imposed by the E.U. against Russia for their military aggression against Ukraine (1). The threat that Russia presents to Ukraine is still present. Also, it is evident by the ongoing and escalating Russian military intervention in Syria and its staunch backing of the brutal and oppressive Assad regime that it has no regard for the welfare of civilians anywhere. The airstrikes that the Russian military has been carrying out in Syria have overwhelmingly been targeting civilian areas that are controlled by the opposition rebel forces and not against IS, as Russia claims (2). Lifting sanctions against Russia now would, in effect, be condoning its actions against civilians in Syria and would be an endorsement of its support of the Assad regime which has been responsible for over 95% of civilian deaths in the war (3) and the major cause of the appalling refugee crisis now being seen in Europe.
