Reopen the Inquest of Adrian Moynihan
We call for the reopening of the inquest into the death of Adrian Moynihan, who died on 26th March 2001 following an incident involving private security personnel.
He had just turned 23 years old.
The cause of death was recorded as asphyxia due to restraint, including neck compression, restriction of the chest (traumatic asphyxia), and the pinning of his arms behind his back.
The original inquest returned a verdict of misadventure, which in simple terms means that the death was considered to have occurred as a result of an accident during a voluntary risk.
For over 25 years, Adrian’s family has sought truth, accountability, and a full and transparent examination of the circumstances surrounding his death. Despite these efforts, serious questions remain unanswered.
Under Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights, the State has a duty to ensure that an effective, independent, and thorough investigation is carried out where the circumstances of a death are in question. We believe this obligation has not been fully met in this case.
Reopening the inquest is necessary to ensure transparency, to address unanswered questions, and to uphold the principles of accountability and justice.
