Petition to Reduce New Traffic Calming Road Layout on Bawnogue Road

We, the residents of Lealand Estate, Bawnogue, want the council and engineers to address the issue of the ridiculously sharp and dangerous corner at the entrance to Lealand Estate. So far, this has been the site of two known crashes, both on Friday the 22nd.

Numerous people are now choosing to use the exit at Lindisfarne, which passes directly by Talbot National School — an area that is already extremely congested. Tyre tracks can be seen across the soil where cars have driven over this corner/kerb, and the whole kerb is blackened and chipped from tyre marks. Online, people have also reported losing their hubcaps.

Drivers of both bin lorry providers are finding this turn impossible to complete with large vehicles, and videos taken by locals show every second or third car either hitting the kerb or veering well over the white line on the Lealand side when exiting. We imagine this would also be the case for any large vehicle — fire trucks, vans, school buses, ambulances, etc.

The engineers may say this turn can be done, and technically it can — but only with great difficulty, and only when there is no other car using the junction/road.

Consequently, this is causing huge delays, which were extremely noticeable today with the return to school.

We invite all councillors and engineers to come and view this junction and, indeed, to drive through it themselves at peak times to see if they can manage it safely. Please also be advised that we will be generating a petition about this issue, as this junction is a serious hazard.

Why is this important?

This is a serious issue for all residents, their visitors, service providers and emergency services. There have been multiple collisions at that junction already and many vehicles have had their wheels and tyres damaged.
