Petition Summary to Galway City Council: Public Toilets for Claddagh and Grattan Beach
Subject: Request for the Installation of Accessible Public Toilets at Claddagh and Grattan Beach
We, the undersigned residents, visitors, swimmers, families, and community members of Galway City, respectfully request that Galway City Council provide permanent, accessible public toilet facilities in the Claddagh and Grattan Beach areas.
These locations are among Galway’s most popular recreational and tourism destinations, attracting thousands of people throughout the year. The Claddagh, South Park, Spanish Arch area, and Grattan Beach are heavily used by walkers, runners, swimmers, families with young children, tourists, and community groups. Despite this high level of usage, there is a clear shortage of convenient public toilet facilities in these areas. Local representatives have previously highlighted the need for public toilets in the Spanish Arch and Claddagh area due to the impact on nearby residents and public spaces.
The absence of adequate facilities creates difficulties for older people, children, people with disabilities, those with medical conditions, and visitors unfamiliar with the area. It can also contribute to public health, environmental, and sanitation concerns, particularly during busy summer months and public events. Public feedback in Galway has repeatedly identified a shortage of accessible public toilets as an ongoing issue.
We ask Galway City Council to:
- Install permanent, year-round public toilets at Claddagh/South Park and Grattan Beach.
- Ensure facilities are fully accessible, family-friendly, and maintained to a high standard.
- Include baby-changing facilities and adequate opening hours.
- Consider temporary facilities during peak summer periods while permanent solutions are developed.
Galway City Council recognises that public toilets are an important local authority service and has introduced initiatives to improve public access to restroom facilities across the city. We believe Claddagh and Grattan Beach should be prioritised due to their importance as community and tourism amenities.
Providing clean, accessible public toilets will improve public health, enhance visitor experience, support local tourism, protect the environment, and improve the quality of life for residents who use these areas daily.
We respectfully urge Galway City Council to make this project a priority and commit to delivering these essential public facilities without delay.
