To: The Government of The Republic of Ireland

Closure of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Ireland

A revolution is underway in Iran. The Islamic Republic continues to oppress its people through systematic and lethal violence. The Republic of Ireland must stand clearly on the side of human rights, freedom, and democratic values. We need Ireland’s support, and closing the embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Dublin would be a strong and meaningful step to support the people of Iran.

We, the undersigned,
who support human rights, freedom, and democratic principles,

note that:
  • Widespread protests and social unrest are taking place across Iran;
  • According to international and human rights reports, security and military forces have used lethal force against civilians, including targeted shootings of protesters and attacks on medical facilities;
  • There are credible reports of children being killed during these actions;
  • Internet and telephone communications have been cut off on a large scale, restricting access to information and preventing documentation of abuses;
  • The Republic of Ireland currently maintains diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

We therefore request that:
  • The Government of Ireland urgently review and reconsider its diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran; and
  • As long as serious and ongoing violence against civilians continues, the Government take the decisive step of closing the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Dublin, as a clear act of solidarity and support for the people of Iran.

Why is this important?

The people of Iran are facing severe repression, including lethal violence against protesters, reports of children being killed, attacks on medical facilities, and widespread communication shutdowns. These actions are serious violations of human rights.

Ireland has a strong tradition of defending human rights and democratic values. Continuing normal diplomatic relations with a regime responsible for ongoing violence risks legitimising these abuses.

Closing the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Dublin would be a meaningful and peaceful act of solidarity. Public support for this petition urges the Irish Government to stand with the people of Iran and take a clear, principled position in response to these violations.
