Call for a Public Multi-Specialty Hospital in County Monaghan

We want the Irish Government and the HSE to prioritise the development of a fully equipped, public multi-specialty hospital in County Monaghan to ensure equitable healthcare access for local residents.

Why is this important?

County Monaghan currently lacks a public hospital capable of delivering a full range of specialist and emergency services. This forces residents—young families, elderly citizens, and people with chronic conditions—to travel to other counties for vital care, increasing pressure on regional hospitals and risking lives.

Monaghan is a growing, vibrant county that deserves local access to modern, high-quality healthcare. Establishing a multi-specialty hospital here would reduce wait times, improve outcomes, and show the government’s commitment to rural health equity.

Ms Bennett cited how the closure of the hospital’s emergency department in 2009 has forced patients to travel to Cavan and face inordinately long waiting times.

“The people of Monaghan and Cavan deserve adequate health services and care within their community,” she contended. https://www.independent.ie/regionals/cavan/news/she-had-better-stop-talking-verona-murphy-reprimands-cavan-monaghan-td-during-hospital-row-with-taoiseach/a1437655610.html
