Basketball Courts in Kilbogget Park Cabinteely

I hope this letter finds you well. My name is James Curry, and I am a resident of Watsons estate, who is passionate about the well-being and development of our community. I am writing to bring to your attention an idea that has been on my mind for many years, which is to create 2 basketbal courts in the park. Especially since the 2 basketball nets that were located on footpaths have been removed to make way for a sign and entrance to a cafe, yes a sign seems to be more important than the basketball nets.

As you may know, recreational facilities play a critical role in promoting physical activity, community engagement, and overall mental health, especially for our youth. Unfortunately, our current facilities do not meet the growing demand for accessible and safe sports spaces when it comes to basketball. Originally the basketball nets were put on the footpath in the park, now the basketball nets are placed in the astroturf football pitch. This is not suitable for a sport like basketbal at any level. I have spoken with many residents, and it is clear that there is a strong desire for more basketball facility’s, which are both cost-effective to construct and popular among a wide range of age groups.

To support this effort, I am in the process of launching a petition, This petition aims to demonstrate the level of demand and the importance of this project to local residents. I believe that by providing two new basketball courts, we can offer a constructive outlet for our youth, promote healthy lifestyles, and foster a greater sense of community.

I understand that creating such facilities requires coordination and resources, but I firmly believe that the long-term benefits far outweigh the initial investment. I would love the opportunity to meet with you or one of your representatives to discuss this proposal further and explore ways in which we can work together to make this vision a reality.

Thank you for considering this proposal. I look forward to your feedback and am happy to provide any additional information that may assist in making this project a success. Together, we can make a positive and lasting impact on our community.

Sincerely,
 James Curry

Why is this important?

Basketball is a highly engaging and an active sport that encourages cardiovascular fitness, strength, and coordination. By advocating for new courts, community members can help improve public health, especially among children and young adults who might otherwise lack access to safe and convenient places for exercise.

Many communities face challenges with youth not having safe or productive places to spend their time. Additional basketball courts will provide a constructive outlet for young people to channel their energy, helping to reduce crime rates, vandalism, or other negative activities.

Public sports facilities bring people together. Whether it's through pick-up games, organized leagues, or just casual play, basketball courts serve as hubs for social interaction. By joining this campaign, people can contribute to creating a space where neighbors can meet, connect, and form lasting relationships, building a stronger sense of community.

By coming together for this campaign, the community can work to create a more active, engaged, and united future.
