Protect North Beach Sand Martins
I am writing in regard to a wildlife crime. There are Sand Martins nesting in the banks on the North Beach, right at the ramp down to the beach. Sisk have engaged a contractor to begin substantial works to repair the ramp accessing the North Beach, starting this Monday.
While I appreciate that these repairs need to be carried out, the works will take place immediately beside the Sand Martin nesting banks.
By all accounts, Sand Martins are a sensitive species and there is a risk that excessive disturbance could cause them to abandon their nests during the breeding season. They will leave in Autumn to go to Subsaharan Africa. We are asking that these works be postponed until then.
Why is this important?
We need to give nature a voice. Due to declining habitats, Sand Martins are amber listed on Birds of Conservation Concern in Ireland. We cannot stand by and watch as more of their habitat is unnecessarily disrupted.
