URGENT: Lift Globe House hunger striker's deportation order now

The deportation order has been lifted which is great news.

This is an urgent appeal to lift Globe House resident's deportation order.
44-year-old Iranian Kurdish man, Amjad Rosstami is now on his 36th day of hunger strike in Globe House Direct Provision Centre in Sligo. He took this action when he received a deportation order from the Minister for Justice last month. In the last few days, he began to refuse to take even water, which means that his health - which has suffered severely - will begin to decline even more rapidly, and place his life at serious risk. We urge Minister Fitzgerald to lift this order as a matter of urgency.

Please also phone the Minister at 01 602 8202 and tweet @FitzgeraldFrncs

Why is this important?

This deportation order almost certainly see him returned to Iran, where he is convinced that he will be killed, as well as endangering his family. As a result, he has said that he would rather die here in Ireland than be killed in Iran.

Our understanding is that he receives a brief daily visit from a doctor, and is being kept under CCTV surveillance. The Direct Provision system has already come under severe criticism for its treatment of adults and children, but to watch a man die a needless and tragic death in the 'care' of the State is unconscionable. Please act now by signing and sharing the petition as widely as you can.

Thank you.

Good news - we've heard that Amjad has received confirmation that the deportation order has been lifted, and he has ended his hunger strike. This will now allow him to claim asylum here in Ireland. This victory was achieved at huge cost to Amjad himself, and also with the incredible support of his friends at Globe House, and friends and activists from the wider community, and the efforts of everyone who took time to phone, write, sign petitions like this one, and all the people who refused to accept that someone could be left to die here, whilst seeking safety from persecution. Respect and thanks to everyone for your efforts.

We still need your help. Amjad is now in his 36th day on hunger strike. There has been good news overnight that the deportation order is to be lifted, meaning that Amjad could remain in Ireland and apply for asylum here. However, it seems that he will not be ending his strike until he receives this news in writing PLEASE CONTINUE TO SHARE THE PETITION. It's really important to keep the pressure on until Amjad has formal assurance that he is safe from deportation.
