Catch-up Meningitis B vaccine for all children

Catch-up Meningitis B vaccine for all children

In light of the recent meningitis outbreak we are calling on the Minister for Health Simon Harris to Implement a catch-up vaccination programme for the meningitis B programme for all children and teens. The under sixes and early teens are both particularly susceptible to this dangerous virus which has already taken three lives and we should ensure full vaccination coverage for children.

Why is this important?

To date there have been 11 cases of meningitis and 3 deaths. The under sixes and early teens are both particularly susceptible to this virus. At present children born before October 2016 are not vaccinated with the meningitis B vaccine and to do so privately costs over €300.

Reasons for signing

  • No child should be excluded from a potentially life saving vaccination because of money.
  • Health care should be affordable and accessible to all. Vaccines shouldn't be considered a separate, monetized issue. Make them affordable for all, at the very least.
  • My daughter didn't meet the cut-off for being included in the schedule (she was born in 2015.) I'm a survivor of meningitis. It was horrifying beyond measure and has left me with permanent, long-term health issues. It is not only reasonable to save others from this experience, but it would save in statewide health costs, which is only positive.
